Alibaba-backed Moonshot has released Kimi K2, an AI model that outperforms ChatGPT and Claude in coding tasks and is more cost-effective. This is Moonshot's second AI update in four months, reflecting the intensifying AI competition in China. Kimi K2 is part of the growing open-source AI market and has been noted for its superior performance compared to models like GPT-5, Claude, and Sonnet 4. The model has been post-trained with 4-bit precision to enhance its readiness for real-world tasks and improve the efficiency of scaling reinforcement learning on long sequences. It implemented Quantization-Aware Training (QAT) with INT4 weight-only quantization for MoE components, enabling native INT4 inference. This results in a 2x speed improvement and state-of-the-art performance, with all benchmarks reported under INT4 precision.
