Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan Makes Historic First Official Visit to Turkey for Talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

On Friday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a historic first official working visit to Turkey, meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Istanbul's Dolmabahce Palace. This marked the first time a head of the Republic of Armenia has visited Turkey at such a high level. The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to normalize relations between Turkey and Armenia, whose ties have long been strained by historical disputes and Turkey’s close alliance with Azerbaijan.

According to Erdogan’s office, the leaders discussed potential steps for Turkey–Armenia normalization and Turkey’s support for Armenia’s peace efforts with Azerbaijan. Pashinyan reported on the X social media platform that he had “an in-depth exchange” with Erdogan, covering the Armenia–Turkey normalization process, regional developments, and the importance of sustained dialogue. “Armenia remains committed to building peace and stability in our region,” Pashinyan stated.

Before the meeting, Armenian parliament speaker Alen Simonyan described the occasion as historic and emphasized its role in reducing the risks of war with Azerbaijan. The visit followed a meeting the previous day between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Erdogan in Turkey, during which the Turkish president reiterated support for establishing peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Turkey and Armenia currently have no formal diplomatic relations, and their shared border has been closed since 1993. Historical tensions largely stem from the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during World War I, which Armenia and many historians recognize as genocide, a term Turkey rejects. The countries’ relations have also been complicated by Turkey’s backing of Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, a region that had a majority ethnic Armenian population.

Pashinyan’s visit is viewed as a significant move toward reconciliation between Turkey and Armenia, signaling renewed diplomatic engagement and dialogue after decades of estrangement.
