Bipartisan Agreement to End U.S. Government Shutdown Advances in Senate
A bipartisan agreement to end the U.S. government shutdown has passed an initial Senate vote 60-40. The deal, negotiated by a group of Democrats and Republicans, includes three full-year appropriations bills to fund departments like Agriculture through the end of the fiscal year and a continuing resolution to fund the rest of the government at current levels until January 30. It also fully funds the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through September. The deal reverses Trump's attempted layoffs of federal workers during the shutdown but does not include an extension of expiring Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. Democrats agreed to a promise that the Senate will vote on a bill to extend the subsidies. The agreement still needs to pass the House and be signed by President Donald Trump to reopen the government.
