Brazil Supreme Court Orders House Arrest of Former President Jair Bolsonaro
2025-08-05 08:45

On August 1, 2025, Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The order was issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing Bolsonaro’s prosecution related to an alleged coup plot to overturn his 2022 election loss. Prosecutors accuse Bolsonaro of heading a criminal organization that aimed to reverse the election results.

Justice Moraes stated that the 70-year-old former president violated previously imposed precautionary measures. These restrictions included a ban on using social media and engaging in political messaging. The violations reportedly involved Bolsonaro posting content on the social media accounts of his three sons, who are lawmakers.

According to Justice Moraes, Bolsonaro “has spread messages with a clear content of encouragement and instigation to attacks against the Supreme Court and a blatant support for foreign intervention in the Brazilian Judiciary.” As a consequence of these actions, the Supreme Court escalated the restrictions and placed Bolsonaro under house arrest while he awaits trial.

The decision led to large-scale protests, with tens of thousands of Bolsonaro’s supporters demonstrating in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, calling for Brazil’s congress to pardon Bolsonaro and others on trial for their roles in the attack on government buildings in Brasília on January 8, 2023. The situation has prompted international attention, including diplomatic responses and proposed trade sanctions.
