CBS News Investigation Reveals Discrepancies in Epstein Jail Video
2025-08-02 03:08

A CBS News investigation reviewed surveillance video from the Special Housing Unit (SHU) of the Metropolitan Correctional Center where Jeffrey Epstein was held. CBS News digitally reconstructed the SHU using diagrams and descriptions from a 2023 report by the Justice Department inspector general. The investigation found that the video does little to provide evidence supporting claims later made by federal officials and identified multiple inconsistencies between the report and the video. The silent surveillance footage, which runs for nearly 11 hours and begins at 7:40 p.m. on August 9, 2019, shows Epstein appearing only once, accompanied by a corrections officer after reportedly making an unmonitored call. At 6:30 a.m. on August 10, 2019, corrections officers are seen rushing across the frame, which the Justice Department later stated was the time Epstein's body was discovered. The report noted that several SHU cameras were functional but unmonitored, and that a failure of the digital video recording system resulted in the loss of most footage from the night Epstein died. CBS News' review raises questions about the accuracy of witness statements and the thoroughness of the government's investigation, though it does not refute the official finding that Epstein died by suicide.
