Democrat Xp Lee won a special election for the Minnesota House seat previously held by Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated in June. This victory restores a tie in the Minnesota House and honors Hortman's legacy. Lee defeated Republican Ruth Bittner in the election. The special election was held in a solidly Democratic district in the northwestern suburbs of the Twin Cities. The seat was left vacant after the politically motivated assassination of Hortman and her husband Mark at their home on June 14. On the same evening, state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were also shot and severely wounded. Vance Boelter has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including second-degree intentional murder and attempted murder, in connection with the shootings.
