Event Overview
Trade restrictions resulting from animal health concerns often reflect the delicate balance between public safety and international commerce. The rapid lifting of import bans following evidence-based reviews demonstrates the role of scientific data in shaping food safety policies and trade relations. Such measures underscore the importance of transparent communication, mutual trust among trading partners, and the responsiveness of regulatory frameworks to evolving health risks and compliance.

European Union Lifts Ban on Brazilian Chicken Imports
The European Union has lifted a four-month ban on importing Brazilian chicken, which was imposed after a case of avian flu was detected at a commercial farm in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The ban was lifted following a video conference between Brazil's Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro and EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Olivér Várhelyi. Várhelyi stated that the data provided by Brazil is sufficient to recognize the country as free from avian influenza. About 30 countries have resumed normal purchases of Brazilian chicken. The European Union, being the seventh-largest buyer, imported 231,900 tons of Brazilian chicken last year. However, some countries like China and Canada still have restrictions in place.
