Nationwide Protests Erupt in France as New Prime Minister Takes Office
Antigovernment 'Block Everything' protests erupted across France, with demonstrators obstructing key roads and infrastructure in response to government austerity measures and the appointment of Sébastien Lecornu as the new prime minister. The protests, involving teachers, 'gilets jaunes' (yellow vests), and students, led to numerous arrests and clashes with police. In Paris, about 150 mostly young protesters blocked the road outside Gare du Nord but were quickly contained by police. Nationwide, 80,000 police officers were deployed, including 6,000 in Paris, and 473 people were arrested. The interior ministry reported hundreds in custody, more than a dozen injured officers, and about 800 protest actions. Demonstrators set fires, torched buses, and severed electric cables, causing traffic chaos and disrupting train services. The education ministry noted disruptions at around 100 schools, with 27 fully blockaded.
