Iran Terminates Cairo Agreement in Response to IAEA Board Resolution
Iran's Foreign Minister criticized the UK, France, Germany, and the US for pushing a resolution on Iran's nuclear issue at the IAEA Board of Governors. He stated that this move ignores Iran's goodwill and damages the IAEA's credibility and independence. The Foreign Minister also noted that the three European countries' attempt to trigger the 'snapback' sanctions mechanism has invalidated the Cairo Agreement, which was the basis for cooperation between Iran and the IAEA in safeguards. As a result, Iran has formally notified the IAEA Director General that it considers the Cairo Agreement terminated.
Iranian Foreign Minister Rejects US and European Attempt to Reimpose UN Sanctions
Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, sent a letter to the foreign ministers of several countries, rejecting the attempt by the United States and the European trio (Britain, France, and Germany) to use the 'snapback' mechanism to reinstate the terminated UN Security Council resolutions related to Iran's nuclear issue. Zarif described this move as illegal and baseless, stating that it contradicts Resolution 2231 of the Security Council, which explicitly terminates all previous resolutions concerning Iran's nuclear program and sets the expiration of related restrictions for 2025. He emphasized that since the U.S. has unilaterally withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal and the European countries have long been in breach of their commitments, they do not have the right to invoke Resolution 2231. Zarif further argued that their claims are an abuse of the United Nations and undermine the international non-proliferation system.
UK, France, and Germany Trigger 'Snapback' Sanctions Mechanism Against Iran
On the 28th, the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany issued a joint statement regarding the Iran nuclear issue, announcing that the three countries informed the United Nations Security Council on the same day of the activation of the 'snapback' sanctions mechanism. According to the statement, if the Security Council fails to adopt a resolution to extend the waiver period on sanctions against Iran within 30 days, the related sanctions will be reinstated.
Iranian and European Foreign Ministers to Discuss Nuclear Talks and Sanctions
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi will hold a joint call on Friday with the foreign ministers of France, the United Kingdom, and Germany to discuss nuclear negotiations and sanctions. The three European countries have threatened to initiate United Nations sanctions against Iran under the "snapback" mechanism if Iran does not return to the negotiation table. These countries and the United States believe that Iran is using its nuclear program to develop weapons, which Iran denies.
