Japanese Cabinet Resigns and New Prime Minister Elected
On February 18, the Japanese cabinet, led by Sanae Takaichi, resigned collectively. The same day, both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors held a prime ministerial nomination election. According to the Japanese constitution, a special session of the Diet must be convened within 30 days after the House of Representatives election to select a new prime minister. During this special session, the newly elected members of the House of Representatives and the current members of the House of Councillors voted to elect a new prime minister, who would then form a new cabinet.
