Livingston Parish Schools get $221K in opioid settlement funds for vape detectors, telehealth Therapy
2025-08-14 08:03

Livingston Parish Public Schools will receive $221,174 in opioid settlement funds to expand drug prevention and support programs in schools. The funding, awarded through a cooperative agreement between Livingston Parish government and Livingston Parish Public Schools (LPPS), was approved by parish leaders on July 24 and authorized by Superintendent Jody Purvis on August 7.

The money will be allocated for telehealth therapy services provided by Daybreak Health, vape detection systems, drug testing, and hiring a new administrative assistant for the Livingston Alternative Program. Vape detectors, already installed in many campuses, alert administrators not only to vaping but also to hostile language and loud noises, such as fights, and can trigger nearby cameras for identification. Schools using these detectors have already observed a reduction in drug-related expulsions.

The administrative assistant at Livingston Alternative Program will coordinate counseling, opioid and fentanyl awareness, behavioral tracking, and serve as a liaison between families and the program. The funds support initiatives aimed at addressing drug addiction among students in the parish.
