Event Overview

The event highlights political tensions between local government representatives and federal immigration policies. Elected officials are pressuring a county sheriff to leverage his national leadership role to resist federal enforcement methods, reflecting broader debates over immigration jurisdiction and law enforcement priorities. This underscores conflicts in balancing community-focused policing with federal mandates, raising questions about the role of local authorities in national immigration enforcement frameworks.

Local Elected Officials Urge Sheriff Bill Brown to Oppose Federal Immigration Enforcement Tactics
2025-06-29 15:03

On July 25, 2025, twenty-nine elected representatives, including Rep. Salud Carbajal (Congress), State Senator Monique Limón, State Assemblymember Gregg Hart, County Supervisors Laura Capps and Roy Lee, and Santa Barbara City Councilmembers Oscar Gutierrez, Kristen Sneddon, and Wendy Santamaria, among others, issued an open letter to Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown. The letter called on Sheriff Brown, who is the president of the Major County Sheriffs of America, to publicly oppose the ongoing federal administration’s immigration enforcement policy described as a “violent and militarized mass deportation campaign.”

The letter stated: “As elected leaders in our community, we are horrified by the violent and militarized mass deportation campaign that is unfolding. Every day, we hear from our constituents who are fearful and anxious about the heavy-handed immigration enforcement operations taking place.” It further urged: “We call on you to do everything within your power as the leader of this national law enforcement advocacy organization to publicly stand up against the Administration’s dangerous immigration enforcement campaign that is putting your constituents in harm’s way. As our elected sheriff, we are counting on you to be a voice for our shared constituents as you advocate for change in Washington, D.C., and we expect nothing less.”

The request came in response to recent federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions, including the use of force during a raid at the Glass House Farms cannabis greenhouse in Carpinteria and Camarillo, where agents used smoke and flash grenades and arrested ten immigrants two weeks prior to the letter.

Sheriff Brown, referencing the diversity of views within the Major County Sheriffs of America regarding federal immigration policy, stated he would not publicly respond to the letter, saying, “it would be inappropriate to do so.”

This public appeal highlights tensions within Santa Barbara County and among local officials concerning federal immigration enforcement methods and their impact on local communities.
