Four Killed in Midtown Manhattan Shooting, Including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam
2025-07-29 23:05

On Monday, July 28, 2025, a mass shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Shane Devon Tamura, 27 years old, entered the building shortly before 6:30 p.m. armed with a high-powered AR-15 style rifle. Tamura fatally shot four individuals inside the building, including off-duty NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was working security at the building. One of the victims was identified as Julia Hyman, a Cornell graduate and employee at the location.

Authorities have stated that Tamura appeared to be targeting the National Football League (NFL) headquarters, located within the building, and he had previously blamed the NFL for his mental health issues. New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that the NFL office was the intended target.

Eyewitness Sebije Nelovic, a 65-year-old cleaner with 27 years of service at the building, described the event: “Suddenly, the glass door was shaking. It started falling down – boom. And this guy came in the middle of the door, and pointed his gun at me. He started shooting around me. I put my hands up and said, ‘I’m a cleaning lady. I’m a cleaning lady.’” Nelovic managed to escape by locking herself in a closet.

Following the incident, a funeral for Officer Islam was held on July 31, 2025, at Parkchester Jame Masjid in the Bronx. Thousands of uniformed officers and community members attended, paying tribute as NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch posthumously promoted Islam to detective first grade. Mayor Adams urged unity, saying, “stand in unison with this family and this city as we heal together.”

The investigation is ongoing, with police confirming that the AR-15 style rifle used by Tamura was sold to him by a Las Vegas casino supervisor. Immediate results of the shooting include heightened security at major city offices and public tributes to the victims.
