Moldova Holds Parliamentary Election Amid Allegations of Russian Interference
Moldovans voted in a parliamentary election on Sunday, seen as a choice between closer ties with the European Union or aligning with Russia. The election was marked by allegations of Russian interference. By 11 a.m., around 14% of eligible voters had cast their ballots. Moldova's pro-Western President Maia Sandu participated in the voting and reaffirmed claims of significant Russian interference, stating her vote was for maintaining peace. She emphasized that Moldova's future is within the EU and warned about the threat Russia poses to democracies. Russian authorities denied interfering in Moldova's affairs, rejecting the claims as anti-Russian and baseless. Authorities warned of potential election day disruptions, including false bomb threats, cyberattacks, power outages, and street violence. Ahead of the vote, law enforcement conducted numerous raids, detaining many individuals. The United Nations, through its Resident Coordinator Yesim Oruc, reaffirmed its support for sustainable development programs in Moldova during a meeting with Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
