Poland's Sejm Committee to Vote on Stripping Former Justice Minister Ziobro's Immunity
Poland's Sejm committee is set to vote on stripping former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro's parliamentary immunity. The committee will review a request to waive his immunity on Thursday, with a vote scheduled for Friday. Ziobro is accused of leading an organized criminal group that misallocated over 35 million from the Justice Fund, including funds for the Pegasus spying system. Prosecutors allege that the group misappropriated over 150 million zloty (about 35 million euros) from the Justice Fund. The National Prosecutors Office is seeking to bring 26 charges against Ziobro, with the most serious alleging that he led a criminal group within his ministry that favored entities related to him. A 158-page document detailing the charges has been sent to the parliament speaker, and the current Justice Minister and Prosecutor General, Waldemar Żurek, has requested a waiver of Ziobro's immunity, as well as his detention and arrest, in connection with abuses of the Justice Fund grant. Ziobro has denied all allegations and filed a complaint, claiming the immunity waiver motion was signed by an unauthorized person.
