Sanmar Denizcilik Launches World's First Methanol-Fueled Escort Tugboat for KOTUG Canada
Sanmar Denizcilik has completed and launched the world's first escort tugboat powered by a methanol-fueled main engine for KOTUG Canada. This tugboat, with a 10-ton bollard pull, is among the most powerful in Canada. The use of methanol fuel technology aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower underwater noise, contributing to the fight against climate change and the protection of marine ecosystems. KOTUG will operate this service in collaboration with the Scianew First Nation community at Beecher Bay, Vancouver. Sanmar Denizcilik emphasizes the importance of involving local communities in sustainable maritime projects and aims to become a leader in low and zero-emission tugboats. Currently, nine fully electric ElectRA class harbor tugs are operating in Europe, North America, and Latin America. Methanol is highlighted as a key fuel due to its lower carbon emissions and operational safety compared to traditional diesel.
