Senate Votes to Change Rules for Trump's Nominees
The Senate voted 45-53 to change rules, allowing President Trump's nominees to be considered in groups. This decision was made despite Democratic objections and the collapse of bipartisan negotiations. The aim was to address the backlog of nominees awaiting confirmation. A deal to expedite the confirmation of Trump's nominees by using the 'nuclear option' failed due to a lack of unanimous senatorial support.
Senate Votes to Change Rules for Trump's Nominees
The Senate voted 45-53 to change rules, allowing President Trump's nominees to be considered in groups. This move proceeded despite objections from Democrats. A deal to use the 'nuclear option' for faster confirmation of Trump's nominees failed due to lack of unanimous senatorial support. Bipartisan negotiators are urgently working to reach an agreement to prevent Republicans from using the 'nuclear option' to change Senate rules, which would allow faster confirmation of President Trump's nominees.
Senate Departs for Recess Without Agreement on Trump Nominees After Failed Negotiations
On Saturday night, the United States Senate adjourned for its August recess without reaching a deal to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominees. This development followed a breakdown in negotiations between Senate Republican leader John Thune, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, and the White House.
Schumer had requested that the Trump administration release frozen federal funds, including those for programs such as the National Institutes of Health and foreign aid, and that President Trump agree not to pursue further legislative packages that would reduce federal funding. According to CNN sources, these terms were presented as preconditions for allowing a batch of Trump’s nominees to be confirmed quickly by the Senate.
However, President Trump rejected these demands. In a post on social media, he wrote: “Tell Schumer, who is under tremendous political pressure from within his own party, the Radical Left Lunatics, to GO TO HELL. Do not accept the offer, go home and explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are, and what a great job the Republicans are doing, and have done, for our Country. Have a great RECESS.”
On the Senate floor, Senator Thune requested unanimous consent to vote on several nominations and then adjourn for the month, but Democrats, in the minority, used their power to delay by requiring procedural hurdles before votes could occur. Schumer stated at a news conference that Democrats were “serious about finding a reasonable path to allow bipartisan consideration of Trump’s nominations,” but said that the president would not agree to the terms. Schumer described the outcome by saying: “In a fit of rage, Trump threw in the towel, sent Republicans home, and was unable to do the basic work of negotiating. Is this the Art of the Deal?”
After negotiations stalled and President Trump’s directive to end talks, senators left Washington without confirming the pending nominees. CNN reported attempts to obtain comments from the White House and Senator Thune. The immediate result is a delay in the confirmation of Trump administration nominees, with the Senate not scheduled to reconvene until after the August recess.
