A heated debate occurred on the U.S. Senate floor regarding a package of seven measures aimed at increasing resources and protections for first responders and law enforcement officers. The measures, previously approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee, faced unexpected opposition from Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who argued that the public safety grants in the package could be used by the Trump administration to politically reward or punish certain states.

The debate took place as Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) led the legislative package, advocating for law enforcement support. Booker proposed an amendment designed to protect public safety grants from politicization, saying: “What I am tired of is when the president of the United States of America violates the Constitution, trashes our norms and traditions, and what does the Democratic Party do? Comply? Allow him? Beg for scraps? No, I demand justice.”

Booker further stated: “I say we reject this and, in a bipartisan way, that we demand and end this kind of constitutionally unjust carving up of the resources that we approve.” His opposition met with resistance from Cortez Masto, who agreed with preventing the politicization of funding but argued, “I agree, withholding funding for law enforcement anywhere in the country, across the country, is just not acceptable. But I also agree that two wrongs don’t make a right.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who worked on the bills with Cortez Masto and Republicans, defended the legislative package, saying, “I completely agree with Sen. Booker about what this administration is doing. But you can’t just pick out a few bills that came out of a committee and say, I’m going to stop those, and then allow for other bills that fund other parts of your budget in your state.”

As a result of Booker’s objections and his move to block the unanimous passage, the package of bills was stopped despite earlier bipartisan support within the caucus. The measures were intended to provide additional protections, training, and tools for officers and their families, and their passage now remains uncertain.
