Sushila Karki Sworn In as Nepal's First Female Interim Prime Minister
In Nepal, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, 73, has been sworn in as the country's first female interim Prime Minister. This follows a week of deadly youth-led protests against corruption and nepotism, which resulted in at least 51 deaths, over 1,300 injuries, and the escape of thousands of prisoners. The appointment was announced by President Ramchandra Poudel's office. Karki, who is also the only woman to have served as the country's chief justice, is seen as an anti-corruption crusader. The Nepalese army has been mobilized to restore order and has imposed a curfew, recovering over 100 looted guns. Despite her popularity among the younger generation, there is uncertainty about her eligibility since she is not a member of parliament. The government has also banned over two dozen social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, in response to the unrest.
