Ten Killed and Twelve Injured in Austrian School Shooting; Gunman Dead
2025-06-10 23:05

On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, a mass shooting took place at the BORG Dreierschützengasse secondary school in Graz, Austria. A 21-year-old former student, who had not completed his studies at the school, entered the building and opened fire using a shotgun and a pistol, both of which he legally owned.

The attacker killed ten people: nine students—six girls and three boys aged 14 to 17, including one with Polish citizenship—and one female teacher. Twelve other students were injured, some seriously, with ages of the wounded ranging between 15 and 26. Among the injured are two Romanian nationals and one Iranian citizen. The gunman took his own life in a school bathroom during the incident. A suicide note was found at his residence in both handwritten and digital video form. A nonfunctional pipe bomb was also discovered during a search of his home.

The authorities responded to reports of gunshots at around 10 a.m. local time. The school was evacuated and secured, and police stated that there was no further danger. Special police forces and a helicopter were deployed. The weapons used were seized at the scene for forensic examination. Officials have not determined a motive for the shooting and said the perpetrator acted alone.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker expressed shock over what he described as a "national tragedy," and announced three days of national mourning. Public mourning included a national moment of silence, with hundreds gathering in the central square of Graz and public transportation in Vienna pausing for a minute. The incident has sparked debate over Austria's gun laws.
