On Thursday, June 12, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a directive to intensify efforts by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport individuals residing illegally in the country, with a particular focus on Democratic-led cities. The statement was made amid increasing tensions between the federal government and California authorities over immigration enforcement.
President Trump, using his Truth Social platform, accused the Biden administration and California Governor Gavin Newsom of bringing "21 million illegal aliens" into the United States, which he claimed is harming schools, hospitals, and communities, and straining welfare resources. Trump stated, "America was invaded and occupied. I am reversing the Invasion. It's called Remigration. Our courageous ICE Officers, who are daily being subjected to doxxing and murder threats, are HEROES. We will always have their back as they carry out this noble mission. America will be for Americans again!"
In conjunction with this directive, President Trump ordered the deployment of thousands of military personnel to Los Angeles and surrounding areas in response to ongoing anti-immigration protests. Trump asserted that, without the National Guard's presence, "Los Angeles... would be burning to the ground right now!"
At a press conference on June 12, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed a continued federal presence in Los Angeles and Southern California. Noem described the protests as violent and "unAmerican," stating, "Masked thugs are assaulting police officers. They're setting vehicles on fire. They're waving foreign flags on American soil while burning American flags and they damaged public property and destroyed private businesses." She warned that, "If you attack one of our law enforcement officers, we are going to come after you and we are going to arrest you, prosecute you and jail you."
The expanded enforcement operation comes amid reported assaults and threats against ICE officers, and coordinated recruitment efforts by ICE to bolster its ranks with new agents, including direct outreach to local law enforcement participants in the 287(g) program. Immediate outcomes include heightened federal enforcement in Los Angeles and publicized government intentions to prosecute those who impede ICE operations.
