Event Overview
Internal organizational disputes marked by leadership divisions often lead to disruptions in scheduled party procedures. Power struggles and factional rifts within political parties can undermine institutional processes, delay critical decision-making, and indicate deeper issues of party cohesion. Such dynamics frequently surface in the context of major policy conventions, illustrating challenges in managing intra-party consensus and maintaining operational timelines.

UML Defers Central Committee Meeting Amid Oli-Bhandari Rift Ahead of Statute Convention
The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML) postponed its central committee meeting that was scheduled for Friday. The meeting was called to endorse the statute draft to be presented at the party's Second Statute Convention, which will be held in Godavari, Lalitpur from September 5 to 7. Leaders from the party's establishment side cited a lack of time for the postponement, while those aligned with former President Bidya Devi Bhandari stated the meeting was canceled after party leadership realized Bhandari's supporters intended to submit a parallel document challenging the official proposal.
As the Statute Convention approaches, rifts between party chair KP Sharma Oli and former President Bhandari have become more pronounced. Bhandari, who recently announced her intention to rejoin the UML and become party chief, is facing resistance from Oli. In July, a UML Central Committee meeting decided not to renew Bhandari's party membership, aiming to prevent her return to active politics, but Bhandari continues to pursue party activities, including a three-day visit to Madhesh Province and ongoing political engagements with party supporters.
