US Treasury Secretary Expects Supreme Court to Support Trump Tariffs
On September 1, US Treasury Secretary Bessent stated in an interview with Reuters at a restaurant in the suburbs of Washington that he believes the US Supreme Court will support President Trump’s use of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose large-scale tariffs on most US trading partners. Bessent said he is preparing a legal briefing emphasizing the urgency of addressing decades of trade imbalances and preventing fentanyl from entering the US. He noted that the US trade deficit with other countries has continued to grow over many years and is approaching a critical point, making it imperative to prevent disaster. Bessent also said that if the case is ultimately lost, the US government has backup plans and that the government still has many other powers it could use, though they may not be as effective.
