Virginia Gubernatorial Race Sees Controversial Ad Targeting Democratic Candidate
In the Virginia gubernatorial race, a controversial ad by EarleSears targets Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger's support for the Equality Act. The ad falsely claims that Spanberger's support for the act means she believes a convicted sex offender, Richard Cox, has the right to undress next to young girls. In reality, as a sex offender, Cox is prohibited from being within 100 feet of such premises. Cox, a registered sex offender, was charged with indecent exposure and other related crimes in 2024. The ads claim that Spanberger's support for the Equality Act means she backs criminals, a stance even more extreme than the infamous Willie Horton ad. EarleSears' campaign is funded by major companies and the Republican Governors Association (RGA), which donated $500,000 to her campaign. Since September 2024, the RGA has received significant donations from major corporations, including Comcast, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google.
