Warner Bros. Discovery to Launch TNT Sports Streaming App
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels announced that sports content will be removed from HBO Max and will be available on a new standalone streaming app called TNT Sports after the separation of Warner Bros. and Discovery. The TNT Sports app is set to launch following the spin-off of its cable networks and will be a direct-to-consumer option, potentially bundled with Discovery+ or distributed through other channels. This move is expected to create additional monetization opportunities. The spinout is planned for next year, with Wiedenfels leading Discovery Global and overseeing the cable networks business. Live sports programming will be removed from HBO Max post-separation, and the TNT Sports app will offer live sports directly to streamers. This strategy aligns with similar moves by Fox Corporation and Walt Disney Company, who have also launched sports-inclusive streaming apps. Additionally, there is potential for a standalone TNT Sports bundle to be included in future bundles with Fox One and ESPN Unlimited.
