Zelensky Holds Phone Call with Guterres and Plans Major Event During UN General Assembly
On August 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he had a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Zelensky thanked Guterres for expressing condolences and support to Ukrainian families who lost loved ones in a Russian attack on Ukraine on August 28, which Zelensky described as one of the largest-scale attacks by Russia. Rescue operations were ongoing, and relevant departments were working to address the aftermath of the assault. During the call, the two discussed measures needed to stop the killings. Zelensky said Ukraine was prepared to hold a leadership meeting, which he believes is the only way to discuss the most important issues, but Russia not only failed to respond positively but also set new conditions and continued its attacks. Ukraine supports Guterres's position that a ceasefire should be the first step toward true peace and thanked him for clearly supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. They also discussed preparations for the 80th United Nations General Assembly. Zelensky stated that Ukraine will organize significant events during the Assembly and looks forward to Guterres participating.
