Two National Guard Members Shot in Ambush Near White House
On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 2:15 PM, two National Guard members were shot and critically injured in an ambush near the Farragut Square Metro Station (17th and High Streets NW), close to the White House. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal from Khost province, Afghanistan, was also shot and hospitalized. The incident is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism. The suspect reportedly entered the U.S. in September 2021 and had been living in Washington state. At the time of the incident, 100 National Guard troops, including 181 from West Virginia, were serving in the city. In response, President Donald Trump ordered 500 additional troops to be deployed to Washington, D.C.
